1. Frank Boumphrey Appointed to Governing Board
(Kynn Bartlett, HWG President, president@hwg.org)
The Governing Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Frank
Boumphrey to the Board of the HTML Writers Guild to replace current
GB member Mike McGhan, who has announced that he will be stepping
down when his term expires in February.
Mike has been a member of the Governing Board since October 1997,
and has also been the Guild's database administrator, providing
invaluable volunteer service by maintaining the HWG membership
database and creating the means for secure online payment of dues
and course registration fees. Mike will continue to support these
services as database administrator when his Board term ends on
February 26. The Governing Board extends our thanks and gratitude
to Mike for his dedicated, thorough, and enthusiastic volunteer
spirit!
Incoming Board member Frank Boumphrey currently works for Cormorant
Consulting, a firm that specializes in medical and legal documentation.
He started programming in the dark ages of punch cards and machine
language. One of his first projects was to help write a program that
differentiated between an incoming Soviet ICBM and a flock of geese.
The fact that we are reading this is evidence that it probably worked!
Burnt out by thinking in Hexadecimals, he left programming and became
a medical doctor, ending up as a Professor and the chief of spine
surgery at a large American Midwest institution. Along the way he
was involved with the introduction of the MRI to the medical
world.
Semi-retirement returned Frank to his first interest of computing
and now he tries to get medical institutions to organize their
medical records in a semi-rational fashion, and on the side lectures
to medical personnel and healthcare executives on documentation issues.
Interestingly he is most in demand by legal firms that want to
rationalize their medical databases! His main objective at the present
is to help XML to become the language of choice in web documents.
Frank currently serves as the Guild's representative to the W3C's
next generation HTML working group, as well as teaching the HWG's
online course in XML (see below for the next available course).
He has authored several books on XML, style sheets, and the web.
The Governing Board is pleased to appoint Mr. Boumphrey to a three
year term beginning on February 26, 1999. Welcome, Frank!
