HWG-News FAQ: Information About Your Newsletter Subscription This issue of HWG-News is sponsored by: --------------------------------------------------------------------- iServer -- Verio Web Hosting http://www.iserver.com Virtual Servers * Electronic Commerce * Reseller Program iServer provides fast, reliable Virtual Server Services to thousands of websites including the HTML Writers Guild, and offers the iServer Reseller Program to help you build your successful Internet business. --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. Proposed New Mailing Lists: HWG-XML and HWG-Style (Kynn Bartlett, Guild President, kynn@hwg.org) From time to time the Governing Board of the HTML Writers Guild evaluates our mailing list charters to ensure that the needs of our members are being met. The following proposals are currently being considered by the Board: HWG-XML Moved: That the Guild create a new mailing list, HWG-XML, with charter as follows: This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and sharing experience with the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) and XML applications, such as XHTML and XSL. Related topics, such as the use of style sheets or scripting languages with XML, are also on-topic. This list will be open to all HWG members and normal HWG netiquette rules will apply; List Guides will help ensure the smooth operation of this forum. Reasons: XML is an important emerging technology for the future of the web. As the HWG is involved with several key applications of XML, especially including XHTML (the reformulation of HTML as XML), it would be useful to have a forum in which our membership can share information and expertise on this topic. HWG-STYLE Moved: That the Guild create a new mailing list, HWG-Style, with charter as follows: This list is used by members of the HTML Writers Guild for discussing and exchanging advice regarding the use of style sheets and related technologies to control presentation of web content. Cascading Style Sheets (levels 1, 2, and 3), XSL, DSSSL, and other web style sheet languages are on-topic for this list. This list will be open to all HWG members and normal HWG netiquette rules will apply; List Guides will help ensure the smooth operation of this forum. The HWG-Style list will replace the hwg-plus-stylesheets list which is currently open only to Full (paid) members of the Guild. Reasons: The HWG currently has a stylesheet mailing list, but as this is closed to only Full members, it is undersubscribed and underutilized. Proper use of CSS enhances accessibility and can provide for some stunning effects; XML relies upon CSS and/or XSL to provide presentation direction. Therefore, broader understanding of stylesheets is needed among the web designer population, and an open, unrestricted list can serve an important role in this regard. FEEDBACK Feedback on all pending Guild motions is welcome. Only members of the Governing Board vote on pending motions, but all members (Full and Trial) are welcome to voice their opinions on these proposed mailing lists, and offer further suggestions for improving the HTML Writers Guild's discussion lists and other programs. To voice your opinions, you can write to the Governing Board care of the President, at , or you may use our online Suggestion Box: http://www.hwg.org/opcenter/suggest/ Let us know how the HWG can better meet your needs! 2. This course will help you feel more comfortable with that task. Through an audience-centered approach to business writing, you'll improve your ability to create grammatically correct, readable, informative text. Using online readings and short, focused exercises, you'll learn how to analyze your own writing and where to go to find answers to writing questions. Perhaps most importantly, you'll learn how to make your writing process a collaborative venture, obtaining the investment and input of colleagues and site stakeholders.
