- Q. My site is currently under construction and I don't yet have a URL to submit. I would still like to register for the Logo so I can design the placement into the site. May I still register without a URL?
A. No, you must have a valid URL to register in order to receive the HWG Logo Kit. However, by inserting the following link with the included size attributes where you would like to place the Logo you can account for the space it will require:
<a href="http://www.hwg.org"><IMG SRC="lo-025.gif" WIDTH="64" HEIGHT="90" ALT="The HTML Writers Guild" TITLE="Link to The HTML Writers Guild"></A>

- Q. May I link to the image on the www.hwg.org web site instead of storing it locally on my web site?
A. No, you may not. By placing a link to the Logo in this fashion, the potential exists for a massive amount of extra hits on our server.

- Q. Your registration and usage seems to only apply to use of the Logo for one web site. I currently maintain 7 web sites and the number is growing. Do I have permission to include the Logo on each of my web sites that I maintain?
A. Yes, you would need to register for use of the Logo on each site it resides on. A revised application form is in the works that will allow this. In the meantime, you will need to register a separate Logo for each site.

- Q. I own/work for a web page design company. How may I properly display the Logo?
A. If you own the company, you may use "The author is a member of" or "[your name] is a member of" text along with the Logo. If you work for a company, you may use "Designed by a member of" text. You should not use the Logo in a way that suggests the company is the member.

- Q. Can I use the Logo on an internal, Intranet site?
A. No. We require a publicly available URL to use the Logo, in order to periodically check and confirm that the Logo is being used in a proper and consistent manner. Also, our Logo Program registration form requires a publicly available URL in order to process registrations.

- Q. My site (or some of the pages within it) are password protected. Does this mean I can't use the Logo on them?
A. You may use the Logo on any freely available pages in a site, but cannot use it on any password protected pages or sites. The Logo Team must have access to all pages that use the Logo. You may of course use a text statement to proclaim your HWG membership on protected pages.

- Q. Is there a wide version of the Logo?
A. No, there are no other versions of the HWG Logo at this time and no other versions are planned.

- Q. Why not make the Logo an 80 x 33 pixel button as per the Netscape, MS IE, Real Audio, Shockwave, etc. buttons?
A. The Guild would like our Logo to standout from the crowd - after all we are different. During the Logo's design phase, we experimented with several different versions of an HWG Logo, including ones in the size of other common logos and found that it didn't meet our goals: to be different from all the other buttons placed on web sites and to deliver our message clearly.

- Q. How about a Logo containing the text "Member of the HTML Writers Guild"? I'm not able to fit the text onto my page, but with a picture including the text, this would be possible...
A. Because this is exactly the problem that we were attempting to solve with the change in Logo and the new Guidelines. In the past, when words were placed into the Logo that would indicate membership, the Logo was widely misused to represent that a business or company was the member of the Guild, when in fact this was not the case.

- Q. Am I correct in understanding the we can now post the HWG Logo on a page designed by us for our employer? Assuming we use the "Designed by a member of..." qualification.
A. Yes, so long as the required text is used.

- Q. I would like to know if when I register, as an example, one of my client web sites, to the HWG Logo program do I need to register every page of the site or if I register the index.html file, it's good for other pages of the site.
A. The Logo needs to be registered once per site provided it is the main page (usually the index.html page) that is registered.

- Q. May I display the text "The author is a member of" in a font color that will disappear into the background of the page so that the image looks better?
A. No. This is a violation of the spirit of the Logo Guidelines. The text must be visible to be in compliance with the Guidelines.

- Q. I can't get the Logo to appear on my page! What's wrong?
A. This is usually caused by not uploading a copy of the Logo image to the server where your site is. You MUST upload and link to the Logo on your site. Instructions on how and where to obtain a copy of the Logo were included in your HWG Logo Kit, which you were e-mailed when you registered. If this is not the problem, then you should check both the name of the image on your server, and in your code. In both cases it needs to be lo-025.gif (or whatever you have renamed it to). Note that on the Internet, case makes a difference. If the Logo is in a separate subdirectory, make sure you include that in your code. Example:
<IMG SRC="images/lo-025.gif">
for a Logo in an "images" directory. If all else fails, the Logo may have been corrupted during transfer. Check a copy if you have one on you hard drive or floppy. If it's okay, re-upload. If not, get a new copy from the locations mentioned in your HWG Logo Kit.
