Volunteers Needed for the Jobs and Contracts Area
Below are listed the currently open
Jobs and Contracts Area
positions, with links to job descriptions, more detailed description
of the requirements for open positions, and instructions for applying.
Currently we have openings in one area:
- Jobs and Contracts Development Team
- For other Guild openings, please see the
Volunteer Program.
Positions Available:
-
Jobs and Contracts Development Team Members
(job description)
-
- Additional Detail:
-
As RFP opens, the Jobs and Contracts Development Team has the following
primary goals:
- develop a web-based interface for JC-management functions
- develop an independent duplicate of the RFP Service to be used
in the following goals
- develop the PSO Service
- develop enhancements to the RFP Service, likely including useful
connections between the RFP and PSO Services.
- develop the JA and JW Services
The Jobs and Contracts area is powered by
Entropy. C++ CGI scripts and Entropy
Mark-up Language templates are used to add, modify, and display data from
Entropy databases. Development team members are expected to be familiar
with HTML and with C/C++ CGI programming. Volunteers should have at least
a basic understanding of database concepts (and an interest in learning
more), or preferably actual experience working with databases (ideally
in a web-related context). www.hwg.org uses an NCSA HTTPd in 'virtual'
BSD/OS 3.1 environment. Volunteers should be comfortable working in a
UNIX environment. Telnet access to hwg.org is limited for security
reasons, so volunteers will be expected to have access to an environment
sufficiently similar to hwg.org to allow completion of accepted tasks.
Pure coding or EML tasks may not require any similarity: only higher-level
CGI-integration tasks will likely prove OS-dependant.
- How To Volunteer:
-
Volunteers are expected to have read the
job description, the additional information above,
as well as the user-support pages describing the
Jobs and Contracts Area
and the
Request For Proposals Service.
Volunteers are asked to gain familiarity with Entropy and Entropy Mark-up
Language reading the user support pages.
You may also want to download and install Entropy locally in order to
better learn.
If you are interested in volunteering to join the JC Development Team, send
a message saying so to the
jc-manager@hwg.org. In your
message, please
- specify that you're interested in the JC Development Team position
- provide your full name
- provide your preferred e-mail address to receive RFP-related mail
- provide your HTML Writers Guild member ID number (this number was
sent to you when you first joined the Guild... if you have forgotten
or lost this number and/or the associated password you will need to
first contact dbadmin@hwg.org.)
- describe your previous (CGI and other) programing experience,
database experience, as well as what languages/products and
operating systems you've worked with.
The JC manager will subscribe you to the team list and give you access
to JC staff pages. Once this has been set up, you will be contacted and
given the URL of these pages, asked to provide some additional information.
You'll also be given information on the current status of the JC
development efforts.:)
